View from the slopes of the Cordillera Negra to the highest tropical mountain worldwide (6768 m). The steep face of the lower northern summit was the source of two catastrophic debris avalanches: in 1962, the area of Ranrahirca (right bottom) was badly affected. In 1970, part of the avalanche even jumped over a hill and destroyed the town of Yungay, with thousands of fatalities. The site of the former town, Campo Santo, appears near the left central bottom of the image.
