Villages such as Larche in the valley of the Ubayette, close to the French-Italian border, have been affected by a loss of population for several decades - a situation which is characteristic for many places in the French Alps. Inhabitants have moved to larger centres, but retain their houses as holiday homes. Therefore, many buildings remain functional and the appearance of the villages is still cared for.
