The tongue of Planpincieux Glacier shows periods of accelerated motion, resulting in instability and, consequently, the occurrence of ice avalanches. Whereas most of these avalanches are small and do not represent a hazard for populated areas or infrastructure, there is a certain possibility of large, far-reaching events. Temporary evacuations have been necessary in the past, based on glacier monitoring data.
