View downstream. On 23 February 2020, a large landslide occurred on the S face of Nevado Salkantay and impacted Laguna Salkantaycocha at its base. The resulting glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) reshaped the valley until tens of kilometres downstream, and led to several fatalities and huge damage. In the place shown here, the GLOF massively eroded the original flow channel, but also overtopped its banks, scouring the soil and vegetation and badly affecting part of Wairaqmachai on the left side.
