View from the Miradouro da Boca do Inferno across the caldera of Sete Cidades in NW direction. This volcanic landscape in the NW part of São Miguel has formed through a long and complex history of mainly explosive eruptions, leaving behind an assemblage of craters and lakes - such as Lagoa de Santiago in the centre of the photo and Lagoa Azul in the background - enclosed in one roundish caldera of 5 km diameter. The village of Sete Cidades is shown in the left background.
