Northern side of the 2860 m high stratovolcano Villarrica, known as Rucapillán in the Mapuche language. This basaltic-andesitic volcano is one of the most active in the country and the entire Andes. It typically displays strombolian eruptions, often accompanied by lahars which evolve due to the sudden melting of snow and ice. Zanjón Seco is one of the main lahar channels, with large events threatening the town of Pucón. Lago Villarrica can be seen in the left background of the image.
