The field of view includes at least five lakes, all of them occupying depressions formed by glacial processes. Übeltalferner, the largest glacier of South Tyrol, is seen on the right side. Until summer 2005, Vogelhüttensee in the centre of the image drained through a channel in the background whilst today's outlet towards the sandur was blocked by the tongue of Übeltalferner. The sudden change of the drainage direction due to the retreat of the largest glacier of South Tyrol resulted in a minor glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF). The inflow to Vogelhüttensee is now disconnected from the glacier.
