The Maria Elena – Tocopilla railway was built to transport nitrates from the mines farther inland to the port at Tocopilla. All trains have to change their locomotives at the station of Barriles. Whilst diesel is used for the line from the mines to Barriles, the steep line down the coast range to Tocopilla is electrified.
