Usoi Dam and Lake Sarez

WI_tj670.jpg

View towards NW. On February 18, 1911, a massive earthquake triggered the rock mass movement visible in the centre of the image. With a volume of approx. 2 cubic kilometres, the deposit blocked the Murghab Valley at a height of 570 m and impounded Lake Sarez (56 km long, elevation: 3239 m asl). The Usoi Dam is the highest dam in the world. Istiqlol Peak (6940 m) is seen in the left background.
