Panoramic view from the highest peak of Monte Somma (Punta Nasone, 1132 m) across the valley of the Atrio di Cavallo to the main cone of Mount Vesuvius (Cono Grande, 1281 m). Monte Somma represents the rim of the caldera in which the main cone has formed since the eruption of 79 AD. The lava flow in the lower centre of the photograph dates back to the eruption of 1944.
