Fès el-Bali | Chouara tannery

WI_mc125.jpg

Leather processing and trade has been an important business in Fès for many centuries. Tanning remains an entirely manual procedure, resembling the way it was done in medieval times. The skins of various animals are first soaked in a mixture of manure and other liquids, and then dyed with natural colours and dried in the sun.
