This saline lake occupies the bottom of an endorheic rift basin on the San Andreas Fault, at an elevation of more then 70 m below sea level. The modern Salton Sea only exists since 1905 when flooding caused the failure of an anthropogenic dyke and the water of the Colorado River (usually diverted for irrigation) poured into the basin.
