Its predecessors dating back to Moorish times (8th Century), most of today's palace or castle dates back to the 15th Century. Used by the kings in former days and as a tourist attraction in modern times, the palace has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 as part of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra.
