Rua Augusta, view towards northwest (Rossio). This part of the town was completely reshaped after the destructive 1755 earthquake. A regular grid was used as the basis instead of the organic layout before, and - what was rather new at that time - resistance to earthquakes was taken into account when planning and constructing the buildings.
