Formerly representing an industrial area in a state of decay, the Quayside has been redeveloped to a modern environment for various types of cultural activities as well as for housing. The Gateshead Millenium Bridge (left side) has connected Newcastle and Gateshead since 2001, whereas the concert hall Sage Gateshead (right portion of the photo) has opened its doors in 2004.
