Kiruna with mine dump

WI_se082.jpg

The history of this northernmost town of Sweden is closely coupled to iron mining (a mine dump can be seen in the background of the photograph). As the underground mining increasingly enters the area beneath the town centre, putting its geotechnical stability at risk, shifting of the town has been long planned and has finally started in 2014.
