This landslide is located in a valley known as the Paglajhora Slump Valley, with a long record of landsliding due to unstable geological conditions. A major reactivation occurred in 2010, severely damaging the UNESCO-listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and the Hill Cart Road. Rail traffic remains suspended in 2017, also due to another major landslide along the track in Tindharia.
