Volcanic field Descabezado Grande - Cerro Azul

WI_ch258n.jpg

Flight Puerto Montt - Santiago de Chile, view in E direction to the reservoir Lago Colbún in the right foreground of the photo. The bright zone in the Andean landscape represents volcanic deposits with a high content of silicium dioxide. The source of this material is not only the Volcán Descabezado Grande (3953 m, in the centre of the field), but mainly a secondary vent of Cerro Azul (at the right edge of the field). A huge eruption occurred there in 1932.
