View from the highest area of the island in S direction. With a surface area of 6 square kilometres, Taquile rises approx. 250 m above the lake. Its more than 2000 inhabitants grow various crops on ancient terraces. Tourism is fully community-based: visitors are assigned to privately operated guest houses on a rotational basis, so that each family and each community only receive tourists from time to time.
