This system of terraces overlays a set of karstic sinkholes. Local climatic effects lead to considerable temperature differences between top and bottom. For this reason, the site might have been used as a lab for the climatic conditions in the various elevation zones of the Andes, used to conclude on the effects of those conditions on specific crops.
