Plymouth, the capital of Montserrat, was permanently evacuated in 1996 after the nearby Soufrière Hills Volcano had reactivated. Since then it has been almost completely buried in pyroclastic flows and lahars. The upper floors of some large buildings remain visible by 2019, but have suffered major deterioration.
