Plymouth, the capital of Montserrat, was permanently evacuated in 1996 after the nearby Soufrière Hills Volcano had reactivated. Since then it has been almost completely buried in pyroclastic flows and lahars. The buildings in the suburb of Town Hill - seen in the right centre of this photograph - still exist, but the area remains an exclusion zone together with the entire southern portion of the island.
