The island of Marie-Galante is part of the region of Guadeloupe, and as such part of France and the EU. Once dependent on sugar cane cultivation and processing, the population declined drastically when this type of industry lost its importance. The image shows the southwestern part of the island with the small coastal town of Capesterre-de-Marie-Galante near the right edge.
