The medieval town of Craco, which once even had a university, was badly affected by landslides between 1959 and 1972, probably caused by water works. It was permanently evacuated from 1963 onwards and finally abandoned after an earthquake in 1980. The village of Craco Peschiera was built nearby to accommodate the former inhabitants. By 2019 the access to the historic centre is restricted, but guided tours are available. Further, the site has been used as a scene for movies.
