Cavagrande del Cassibile | Necropolis and cave dwellings

WI_e2147a.jpg

Many of these rock caves, approx. 3000 years old, were originally created as burial places (necropolis), others date back to an even earlier settlement. In early medieval times the caves were used as a refuge by Byzantine Christians escaping from the Saracens. Some of the caves served as chapels, a function that remained active for some time after the site had been depopulated.
