View from Calle de Alcalá in W direction. Following the ideas of Georges-Eugène Haussmann in Paris, where large boulevards were cut through the city in the 19th century, the Gran Vía was constructed between 1910 and 1927, forcing the relocation of many inhabitants. This thoroughfare is lined by buildings designed in early 20th century revival styles, such as the Edificio Telefónica seen in the background of the photo.
