View from Île de la Barthelasse across the Rhône in southeastern direction. The Palais des Papes reflecting in the river was the residence of six popes in the period between 1335 and 1430. It is one of the most important medieval Gothic buildings in Europe and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, together with the Pont Saint-Bénézet and the historic centre of Avignon.
