Delta del Po

Flight Munich - Rome, view in eastern direction. The delta of Italy's longest river is the consequence of the southward deviation of the water in the early 17th Century, in order to avoid siltation of the Venetian Lagoon. Extraction of methane and exploitation of groundwater led to subsidence of the ground below sea level. In 2015, the delta has been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
