This site is of great natural and cultural importance. The photo shows the rift valley forming the Mid Atlantic Ridge, separating the Eurasian and North American plates (view from the North American side in northeastern direction). The Icelandic parliament (Alþingi) was located here from 930 to approx. 1800.
