This site is of great natural and cultural importance. The foreground of the photo shows the edge of the rift valley (with clearly visible faults) forming the Mid Atlantic Ridge, separating the Eurasian and North American plates (view from the North American side). The Icelandic parliament (Alþingi) was located here from 930 to approx. 1800.
