This floodplain has been formed by the large amount of melt water from the ice caps of Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. Particularly high discharges are measured during jökulhlaups, potentially destructive glacial floods caused by subglacial volcanic eruptions. River engineering serves for reducing the consequences of flood events.
