A system of growing rock fractures on Svínafellsheiði has raised concerns with regard to a potential landslide cascade involving Svínafellsjökull and its proglacial lakes. A volume of several tens of millions of cubic metres is potentially susceptible to catastrophic failure. The area around the glacier tongue remained open to visitors, but building restrictions came into effect and warning signs were installed.
