Mývatn with geothermal power plant

View across Lake Mývatn, dammed by a volcanic eruption 2300 years ago, in western direction. The Mid Atlantic Ridge runs through this area, leading to frequent volcanic activity. Also post-volcanic phenomena such as the thermal lake shown in the foreground of this photo are commonly encountered. Power plants make part of the huge amount of geothermal energy accessible.
