Sierra Bermeja with pine forest

WI_e5164.jpg

View from the access road to Pico de los Reales in NW direction. The forest in the foreground of the photo, at an elevation of approx. 1200 m asl, is dominated by Pinus pinaster, in this case growing on peridotite. The Sierra Bermeja forms the largest outcrop of ultrabasic rocks in the western part of Europe. These rocks once formed in the Earth's mantle. They were uplifted in the course of subduction processes, and came to the surface as the overlying rocks were eroded.
