Franz-Josefs-Höhe | Way down to the Pasterze

WI_at071_511.jpg

These steps cross an outcrop of prasinite, the same rock type of which the nearby Großglockner (3798 m) is built. This metamophic rock represents a former ocean floor, which was tectonically uplifted and exposed through erosion of the overlaying rock. The original basalt evolved into prasinite through metamorphosis.
