View from the road leading up to the Col de l'Iseran. Val d'Isère - well known for its Alpine ski races - has served as a winter sports station since the early 20th Century, and unifies the characteristics of different stages of the evolution of tourism in the French Alps. It has grown around the original village of Val d'Isère.
