The tongue of Planpincieux Glacier shows periods of accelerated motion, resulting in instability and, consequently, the occurrence of ice avalanches. Most of these avalanches are small and do not represent a hazard for populated areas or infrastructure. The deposit of such an avalanche can be seen in the foreground of this photograph. There is, however, a certain possibility of large, far-reaching events. Temporary evacuations have been necessary in the past, based on glacier monitoring data.
