Pila has developed in the second half of the 20th Century in an area formerly characterized by alpine pastures with some small settlements. It is connected to Aosta not only by a road, but also by a cable car. Even though it is mainly used as a ski resort in winter, Pila has also established itself as a prominent mountain biking area in summer.
