Road sign in Staffa, the main village of the community of Macugnaga. Members of the ethnic group of the Walser, originating from the Valais in Switzerland, have crossed the Monte Moro Pass and settled in this area hundreds of years ago. They have brought Swiss architecture, today forming an interesting mixture with Italian-style buildings, and a German dialect which is reflected in some place names. Bilingual road signs are particularly common in the more touristic spots.
