This kind of water channels (locally known as Suonen or Bissen) has a very long tradition in the Valais, going back at least to medieval times. Due to the dry climate in the rain shade of the surrounding high-mountain ranges, water for irrigation and other purposes had - and still has - to be brought from mountain streams down to its place of destination. Nowadays, many of these channels are accompanied by quite popular hiking trails.
