The Lüegilkin Viaduct forms part of the southern ramp of the Lötschberg Mountain Railway, connecting Bern with the Valais. This railway line opened in 1913 and was extended to two tracks in the period 1976-1992. The line has remained in operation after the completion of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel in 2007, but with lower train frequency.
