This 34.6 km long railway base tunnel, connecting Bern with the Valais, was put into service in 2007 after 13 years of construction. Only one of the two single-track tubes is in full operation. This photo shows the S portal of the tunnel near St. German in the Valais, view down the Rhone river in W direction.
