Rhone Valley with Pfynwald and Illgraben

View from Niwenalp in SW direction to the Illgraben with its large debris cone. The Illgraben represents a very active and well-surveyed debris flow catchment. The large forest occupying the left side of the cone is the Pfynwald, representing the border between the German-speaking and French-speaking parts of the Valais. The prehistoric rock avalanche of Sierre can be seen in the right centre of the photo.
