The largest warehouse district in the World was developed between the 1880s and the 1920s. After substantial damage during World War II, major renovation and revitalization took place in the second half of the 20th Century. As warehouse space became obsolete, this function was more and more replaced by other types of use. The Speicherstadt was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.
