Irrigation channels, known as levadas, have formed a critical infrastructure for centuries. They transport water from the Central Mountain Massif down towards the lower slopes, leading through tunnels and pristine laurel forests, and along steep mountain sides. Here, the inflow to the Levada do Furado is regulated by a water lock.
