Pico do Arieiro | Volcanic layers and dike

WI_md124.jpg

Alternating layers of solidified lava and pyroclastic deposits indicate the changeable volcanic history of Madeira, with phases of effusive and phases of more explosive eruptions, whereas the vertical structure in the left portion of the scene represents a magmatic dike. The military radar station in the summit area of Pico do Arieiro (1818 m) can be seen in the background of the image.
