The highland Paul da Serra, extending at an elevation of approx. 1400-1500 m asl., has been used as pastureland and also as water tower for a long time. Much of the runoff is diverted into levadas leading down to the coastal areas. More recently, various wind parks have been installed near the edges of the highland.
