Fogo | Pico do Fogo with lava flow of 1951
Panoramic view from the top of the escarpment (Bordeira) across the caldera, which formed at least partly due to massive prehistoric landsliding, to Pico do Fogo (2829 m). This stratovolcano represents the highest peak of Cape Verde and West Africa, and the second highest of Macaronesia. Its main crater last erupted in the 18th Century, whereas more recent eruptions took place at secondary craters. Monte Orlando (centre of the photo) and the lava field in the right foreground formed during an eruption in 1951.
