Much of Portela, one of the two villages of the community of Chã das Caldeiras, was covered by lava during the volcanic eruption of 2014/15. The roofs and upper parts of some destroyed buildings are still visible, whereas the village - founded in 1920 and largely relying on grape cultivation and tourism - has been rebuilt on top of the lava. Pico do Fogo (2829 m) prominently appears in the background of the scene.
