Much of Portela, one of the two villages of the community of Chã das Caldeiras, was covered by lava during the volcanic eruption of 2014/15. Also the facilities of the guest house Casa Marisa were destroyed. Like many other buildings, the cabins were later reconstructed in a rounded shape, an architectural feature characteristic for the area.
